July 12th – Summoned and Sent

Scripture Reflection . . .

The Gospel for the 15th Sunday in ordinary time begins “Jesus summoned the Twelve and began to send them out . . .” (Mark 6:7-13).

The Second Reading from Ephesians declares that God “chose us in him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and without blemish” (1:3-14).

From Amos, we hear “The Lord took me from following the flock, and said to me, Go . . .” (Amos 7:12-15).

One message in these scripture may be to come to Christ and let God draw us to himself before we attempt to do anything.  How can we go out to preach, heal, love, be merciful and compassionate if we don’t first enter into mystery of God’s love and mercy; until we have experienced God’s presence for ourselves.  This love then will send us forth with enthusiasm and passion and compassion.  We will then be able to go forth knowing ourselves so loved  we can be fully the persons we are created to be.  In this is holiness.

In the lives of the Sisters  . . .

As Sisters of the Holy Redeemer, we reflect on the past week and our experiences of being summoned and sent.

First, our name, Sisters of the Holy Redeemer, remind us that we are holy, because of the love and mercy of God who poured out his life for us.  We are called to the foot of the cross to look upon God’s love for us.  This love calls us forth to share God’s love and mercy with others, especially those who experience the suffering of the cross in their lives.

On Monday, we gathered to thank and say farewell to two women who have worked with us for many years.  One was summoned here over 20 years ago and is now being sent forth to share her time more fully with her family.   During their time with us they shared their deep faith and love of God. Their faithfulness continues to touch our lives, calling us to live our faith ever more fully.

A few Sisters were summoned back from their retreats and vacations where they experienced deep encounters with God or the joy of being with family and friends.  They are now sent out to their ministries renewed in body and spirit.

The Gardeners of the Sisters’ community garden were summoned to the township building to receive an award for their commitment to sustainable, local food production, creation and community.  Now we are sent forth encouraged to continue our efforts.

The leadership team of the Sisters was summoned to the countryside to carry out their responsibilities in an atmosphere of beauty and peace so they can be sent back refreshed to share their inspiration with all of us. Perhaps they may be hoping to be summoned back to the country again!

It is by responding to the summons that we gain strength, encouragement and inspiration to continue or deepen our response to God’s call.

In your life . . .

So now you are summoned to listen to God’s call in your life.  You may wish to take a few moments to reflect:  When was the last time you heard God speak to you?  What did God say?  How did you respond?  Did you respond?  How did this effect your life?

Blessings on your week ahead- whenever you may summoned, wherever you may be sent.
